Some 286 days ago, on Fefruary 24, 2006, we started asking our City questions about illegal dumping. Then-Mayor GEORGE GARDNER promised "answers" at the February 27, 2006 City Commission meeting.
The "answers" never came.
FDEP cheated our City's residents out of a fair election by suppressing the fact of the proposed fine of over $56,000 until after the November 7 election. See below.
No on day 286, we deserve answers to the questions. No more insults or non sequiturs or flummery from our CITY MANAGER WILLIAM B. HARRISS, new Mayor JOSEPH LEROY BOLES, JR., his golfing buddy and VICE MAYOR DonALD CRIcHLOW, or Commissioners GEORGE GARDNER, ERROL JONES and SUSAN BURK.
Some new questions for the politicians and putative "professionals" who got us in this mess.:
Do you agree it was foolish to dump illegally?
Will you agree never to engage in illegal dumping again?
Will you apologize to the people of the City of St. Augustine?
Will you start giving environmental protection of this beautiful place the priority that it deserves?
Will you agree to protect City whistleblowers from retaliation?
Will you bring CITY MANAGER WILLIAM B. HARRISS up on charges at an open public hearing?
In secret, behind locked gates, our Nation's Oldest City dumped a landfill in a lake (Old City Reservoir), while emitting sewage in our rivers and salt marsh. Organized citizens exposed and defeated pollution, racism and cronyism. We elected a new Mayor. We're transforming our City -- advanced citizenship. Ask questions. Make disclosures. Demand answers. Be involved. Expect democracy. Report and expose corruption. Smile! Help enact a St. Augustine National Park and Seashore. We shall overcome!
