Letter: Land speculators blight Lincolnville

Editor: As a tax-paying resident of Lincolnville and owner of properties here, I would like to know when the city will address the fact that speculators can buy properties, board them up and wait for the values to go up due to the efforts and investments of home owners like myself. We put money into our properties to improve the aesthetic look, and safety of Lincolnville. I know this is not a problem on the other side of Washington Street. Lincolnville home owners pay the same high real estate taxes as the rest of the city, but with little of those taxes benefiting our neighborhood. Just ride through and judge for your self. Maybe these boarded-up eyesores that paint an ugly picture of our neighborhood should be given a deadline on restoring them or demolishing them and keeping the lot clean. It's time the speculators and Flagler College interests see the good of the community that lives with the blight these speculators impose on us. Couple this with the fact that Flagler's business is growing real estate tax free, and you have Lincolnville paying more than high taxes to support speculators and Flagler College.
It's time for Lincolnville to stand up for itself and use its voting power to get the same services the rest of the city gets from our tax dollars.

In secret, behind locked gates, our Nation's Oldest City dumped a landfill in a lake (Old City Reservoir), while emitting sewage in our rivers and salt marsh. Organized citizens exposed and defeated pollution, racism and cronyism. We elected a new Mayor. We're transforming our City -- advanced citizenship. Ask questions. Make disclosures. Demand answers. Be involved. Expect democracy. Report and expose corruption. Smile! Help enact a St. Augustine National Park and Seashore. We shall overcome!
