Letter: Watch for more fees for county services

Editor: Those who sponsored and voted for the amendment to lower property taxes in the last election can now congratulate themselves on its successful passage.
But the potential consequences of this passage could include a shift from property taxes to fees to support local and state government services, including fire protection.
Most of what government provides are services, so there is considerable potential for new fees.
The bottom line is to shift the cost of government from taxes to fees, and from those who can most afford it to those who can least afford it. Justice Oliver Wendel Holmes said it best: "Taxes are the price we pay for civilization." But now it appears, there is a growing resistance to paying taxes.

In secret, behind locked gates, our Nation's Oldest City dumped a landfill in a lake (Old City Reservoir), while emitting sewage in our rivers and salt marsh. Organized citizens exposed and defeated pollution, racism and cronyism. We elected a new Mayor. We're transforming our City -- advanced citizenship. Ask questions. Make disclosures. Demand answers. Be involved. Expect democracy. Report and expose corruption. Smile! Help enact a St. Augustine National Park and Seashore. We shall overcome!
