Letter: Flagler Republican Club wrong to cancel speeches

Daniel Nagy

Publication Date: 07/09/08

Editor: In response to the article printed July 3, concerning the scheduled speeches by State Attorney John Tanner and R.J. Larizza that were cancelled by the Flagler County Republican Club.

As past chairman of the Republican Executive Committee of Flagler County, I'm disappointed in the way that the Flagler County Republican Club handled this matter. In my short stay as chairman, everyone was welcomed to speak their mind when open for discussion. Potential members and guests were permitted to attend but were not permitted to vote on party issues or participate in discussions.

If I were still chairman of the Executive Committee, I would have permitted the 20 law enforcement officers to attend the Candidate Forum as long as they were not disruptive. If the candidates do not object to the presence of these law enforcement officers why should the Republican Party?

It is understood that the Flagler County Republican Club is technically a social club. In my opinion the club did not act very socially towards those 20 law enforcement officers. The club should be able to embrace and accept all views, whether they are presented in a positive or negative manner.

Daniel Nagy

Past Chairman

Flagler County Executive Committee, Flagler County
