Charter Debate
The St. Augustine Democratic Club will hold a formal debate at 7 tonight on the proposed St. Johns County Charter in The Centre at The St. Augustine Record. Debating for the charter is Roger Van Ghent; debating against is Herbie Wiles. A question-and-answer period will follow their presentation.
The proposed charter and its four amendments would substantially change the government of St. Johns County. A referendum on the charter will be included with the Aug. 26 primary election.

Grand opening
The St. Augustine Republican Club will hold a grand opening of its headquarters from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. The headquarters is at 283 San Marco Ave.
The public is invited to attend.

The St. Augustine Republican Club's grand opening Saturday is also the occasion of a public viewing of selected photographs of Republicans at headline events taken by photographer Maureen Ortagus. Over the last year, Ortagus covered the dedication ceremonies at the Veterans' Memorial Park, the ceremony marking Sgt. Tutton Drive's renaming and the ground breaking of Clyde E. Lassen State Veteran's Nursing Home. Also included will be photos of John and Cindy McCain at Presidency 4 and Cecil Field.

Candidate forum
The Northwest St. Johns County Community Coalition is sponsoring a Meet the Candidates Forum at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, July 17, at Westminster Woods on Julington Creek. Featured are:
* County Judge Patti Christensen and her challenger, St. Augustine attorney Anne Marie Gennusa.
* District 1 County Commissioner Cyndi Stevenson and challengers Al Abbatiello and Merrill Roland.
* District 3 County Commissioner Ben Rich and his challenger, Mark Miner, an Iraq War veteran.
* District 5 candidates Ken Bryan, Randy Brunson and Gary McMahon.
Questions will be compiled by a nonpartisan selected committee. Audience questions will be requested.
