Editor: It is astonishing to read the Record's article on a poll of 880 local registered Republicans and learn that 66 percent of them approve of President George W. Bush. National polls have his approval rating at below 25 percent and falling. I find it inconceivable that this local sampling can be at such odds with established national polls.
Many Republicans I know, and with whom I discuss political interests, voice regret -- even embarrassment -- at their support for Bush. Many will probably still vote their party going forward in spite of their concern for domestic and world conditions.
While this survey may enlighten local candidates I really wonder if it is a true reflection of the 65,900 registered Republicans in St. Johns County.

In secret, behind locked gates, our Nation's Oldest City dumped a landfill in a lake (Old City Reservoir), while emitting sewage in our rivers and salt marsh. Organized citizens exposed and defeated pollution, racism and cronyism. We elected a new Mayor. We're transforming our City -- advanced citizenship. Ask questions. Make disclosures. Demand answers. Be involved. Expect democracy. Report and expose corruption. Smile! Help enact a St. Augustine National Park and Seashore. We shall overcome!
