St. Augustine archaeologist Carl Halbirt unearthed bones Monday that possibly could be those of a Native American.

The pieces of bones, including a possible pelvis bone, were discovered while the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind was putting in a new water line on Milton Street, Halbirt said.

He reported the find to State Archaeologist Ryan Wheeler, who asked the city in an e-mail to rebury the disturbed material where found, which is mandated under state law, and give the state a map and photos of the bones.

"We think it may be human remains, but without exposing more of it, we'll never know," Halbirt said. "It's a guessing game."
