What a difference 45 years makes.
In the same place where civil rights workers were hit with bricks, in the same place where slaves were sold, St. Augustinians celebrated our new President, Barack Obama yesterday.
It was not unlike an exorcism, with hundreds of people, far more than in any city-sponsored concert.
The itty-bitty city's small-minded City Manager, WILLIAM B. HARRISS, through henchman PAUL WILLIAMSON, tried to talk organizer Doral Lovall out of the Slave Market Square venue, based upon expected protesters. Dee just said "no."
There were protesters --- two of them -- the seedy, sere remnants of the John Birch Society and KKK protesters who once made progressives' lives miserable hereabouts.
The two protesters refused to identify themselves. One is a protestant minister, a Rev. Russo. Both were obviously so ashamed of their homophobia and racism that they "dare not speak their names." I walked by them and said, "God forgive you."
How like the "anonymice" at www.plazabum.com and www.disgracefulpeople.com for the fascists picketing in the Slave Market Square to refuse to give their names. Might embarass them if they are City contractors or spouses, you reckon?
How indescribably cowardly of the KKK-style protesters to refuse to give their names, when 45 years ago, everyone knew the name of the great big mean 'ole KKK members, who numbered the Sheriff and Police Chief among their cowardly hooded, robed members, working to fight unions by dividing white from black workers.
What wimps.
In response to the two KKK types, other Obama supporters were more outspoken than me, but another reportedly told SAPD officers not to hassle them, because our Constitution, in its majesty, protects the racist picketers' right to be wrong.
I remember watching in Memphis, Tennessee in 1985 as two KKK members unfurled a Confederate flag on the Shelby County Courthouse steps. Everyone ignored them. No newspaper photographers came. They went and made telephone calls. No one cared.
Bigots must either be confronted or ignored. They have no value other than to teach young people not to abuse their own children by inculcating hatred, as our local hate sites (tatterdemalion Plazabum.com and shamefulpeople.com) do every single day.
Like every single member of Nixon's Enemies List, I wear their scorn as a badge of honor. How wondeful to be included in the City and County officials' and contractors' irascible enemies list -- I've now got over 66 pages of fear and smear directed against me by WILLIAM B. HARRISS' racist, sexist, misogynist, homophobic cronies on Plazabum.com. Reminds me of the stuff the fascists said about Jefferson, Lincoln and FDR. How chagrined I would be if anyone at the well-named Plazabum.com ever said anything nice about me (or any of my friends).
Once a center of the John Birch Society and Ku Klux Klan, St. Augustine has grown past their bigotry, as yesterday's huge gathering in the Slave Market Square showed the world.
Speaking of the JBS and KKK, the fiends at Plazabum.com and Historic City News are standing on their right to remain silent -- not a word about yesterday's joyous celebration. Let the racist, sexist, misogynist, anti-Gay Republicans hold their heads in shame.
The well-named Plazabum.com is a clucking cluster of kluckers. They seethe at having an African-American President and African-American County Commissioner, even threatening violence and kidnapping against me.
Historic City News is more of the same.
We progressives bear their scorn (and ignorance) as a badge of honor.
There are more of us progrssive than there are of the racists at Plazabum.com -- by a factor of 500 to 2, as revealed by the photos below from today's St. Augustine Record.
