Glitch disables courthouse phones

Cause of switch failure unknown

Being able to use computers and phones is something most people take for granted.

Until they can't.

A core switch went out Sunday night at the Richard O. Watson Judicial Center.

The backup switch went out, too, said Wiley Thibault, St. Johns County's management information system director.

Those switches affect phone systems in the courthouse, the clerk's office and a portion of the Sheriff's Office.

Since the phones are on the same network as the computers, the different work stations couldn't talk to each other, explained Thibault, who worked on the problem until midnight Sunday.

"Think of the switch as the highway," he said. "And it was closed."

He was back at it early Monday morning, "reconfiguring" the system.

Replacement parts arrived around 1:30 Monday afternoon. The system was repaired around 3.

Thibault doubted he would be able to find out why the main switch and the backup failed.

"It is strange," he said. "But we don't have any way of knowing how that happened."
