County needs to keep firefighters

Editor: Lay off our firefighters? That is like laying off our soldiers. It's just unheard of.
With the money that exists in this county the commissioners can find a way to keep the fire fighters. The most recent report in the paper neglected to tell that some firefighters have not had a raise in several years.
As a person with close personal ties to the fire department through family and friends, I understand first-hand what this job entails and the special people who chose to do it.
At any given time in their work day, they may be asked to give their life for one of us or one of our loved ones. No questions asked.
I have respect for anyone who works but your average county worker or carpenter does not face this risk in his or her job. So just like our military, commissioners should find a way to give these brave men and women whatever they need to stay in this county and continue to protect its citizens.
Shame on the commissioners, if they don't succeed.

In secret, behind locked gates, our Nation's Oldest City dumped a landfill in a lake (Old City Reservoir), while emitting sewage in our rivers and salt marsh. Organized citizens exposed and defeated pollution, racism and cronyism. We elected a new Mayor. We're transforming our City -- advanced citizenship. Ask questions. Make disclosures. Demand answers. Be involved. Expect democracy. Report and expose corruption. Smile! Help enact a St. Augustine National Park and Seashore. We shall overcome!
