Citizens are joining hands at various beach locations Saturday to express their concern about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

They will be part of Hands Across the Sand, a national event conducted by citizens across America who are gathering on beaches and in parks and cities.

One group, in which the First Coast Chapter of Surfrider Foundation is involved, will gather at the south side of the St. Augustine Beach pier at 11 a.m., and another group, coordinated by SeaBabes Apparel, will assemble at 11 a.m. at each beach ramp from the St. Augustine Beach Pier south to Crescent Beach near South Beach Grill, and to the north in Vilano Beach.

Paul Hayden, vice chairman of the First Coast Chapter of Surfrider Foundation, said volunteers meeting at the pier area at 11 a.m. will organize in preparation for the hand-holding event, which begins at noon. Individuals wishing to volunteer with that group are invited to e-mail Hayden at surferpaulcos@yahoo.com.

Volunteers with SeaBabes Apparel will gather at the water's edge and make a human line in the sand by joining hands and publicly take a stand to let local, state and federal governments know that "we support our neighbors in Louisiana, Alabama and of course our own west coast," according to an e-mail from that organization.

That group, too, is in need of volunteers. Interested parties are invited to call Anne at 501-9209 or Jeff at 540-1466.
