Mica Honors Senator Paula Hawkins
Washington, May 25 -
Washington, DC – U.S. Rep. John L. Mica (R-FL) today introduced legislation to name the Maitland Post Office in honor of the late U.S. Senator Paula Hawkins. Mica said, “It is fitting on National Missing Children’s Day 2010 to recognize former Senator Hawkins who authored and helped secure enactment of the 1982 law.”
Mica added, “It is also appropriate that the Maitland Postal Facility bare the name of both the ‘Maitland Housewife’ who began as a community activist in that city and went on to become the first female elected to the U.S. Senate without family connections. Paula Hawkins also has the distinction of being the first Florida statewide elected female when she won a seat in 1972 on the Public Service Commission.”
Mica explained his effort in naming the facility: “Having served as her Chief of Staff when the legislation passed I can say with certainty there would not be Federal missing children’s statutes or the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children if it was not for Paula Hawkins determination and tireless work. Her heart ached for John and Revé Walsh of South Florida who first contacted Senator Hawkins as they searched for their missing son Adam.”
President Ronald Reagan signed the Missing Children’s Act into law on October 13, 1982. This year marks the 28th year in national recognition of the law’s passage.
The post office renaming measure must now be approved by the U.S. House and Senate. All Florida Representatives joined Mica as cosponsors of the bill.
