The Dave Aronberg-Dan Gelber endorsement duel among Democratic brass hit new turf Friday: South Florida’s congressional delegation.
The rivals for the Democratic nomination for attorney general both rolled out big-name endorsements. Gelber got the backing of U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston, who is the most influential Florida representative in the U.S. House. Aronberg picked up the support of U.S. Rep. Ron Klein, D-Boca Raton, who represents an important swing district along the coast in Broward and Palm Beach counties.
To an extent, the endorsements reflect the political bents of Gelber and Aronberg.
Wasserman Schultz is a liberal fighter, who represents heavily Democratic Broward and is known as an effective attack dog against Republicans.
Klein represents a moderate district and is known as being more centrist and pro-business than Wasserman Schultz.
Here’s what each had to say.
Wasserman Schultz on Gelber: “When Dan Gelber came to the Florida Legislature we quickly knew he was the real deal. A battle-tested federal prosecutor, he immediately proved himself a person of uncommon passion and integrity. Dan and I have stood, shoulder to shoulder, fighting back some of the most regressive policies the right wing could throw at us. Elected by his colleagues to be their Democratic Leader, Dan has never backed away from a fight, and never compromised our principles.”
Klein on Aronberg: “I have known Dave Aronberg since his days as an assistant attorney general in South Florida, and since joining the Florida Senate he has exhibited unparalleled leadership on issues important to the people of my district, as well as all Floridians. His legislative record embodies the commitment to public safety and consumer advocacy that we must demand of Florida’s next attorney general. That’s why today I proudly endorse Dave Aronberg.”
