Dan Gelber says no more playing nice with Dave Aronberg

After weeks of claiming he'll run a civil campaign, Dan Gelber is no longer playing nice with his rival in the Democratic attorney general primary, Dave Aronberg.

"He is a junior lawyer at his best moment," Gelber said of Aronberg during a St. Petersburg Times editorial board interview Friday morning.

Aronberg's never tried a jury case and has spent most of his adult life not in the courtroom, but running for office, Gelber said.

"I probably would have been more restrained but he has made this about fiction," said Gelber, referring to a slew of recent negative campaign ads that reveal the private law firm he worked for until recently, Akerman Senterfitt, signed BP as a client in oil spill matters.

"As one of the leading critics of BP, you will never have to worry which side I'm on," Aronberg, a state senator from Greenacres, wrote in an e-mail to supporters. "Our next Attorney General needs to be the people's attorney -- and not the polluter's attorney.

PolitiFact Florida looked at Aronberg's claim and found it was barely true.

Gelber said he quit his firm once he learned of the business deal and avoided any discussions about the case.
