Editor: This is about the 13-day so-called business and informational trip to Spain that is planned by six city of St. Augustine employees. I was dumb-founded when I first read of this excursion at taxpayer expense. The employees involved need to realize that the people of our city are not fools, and their jobs aren't permanent in nature. There is no sane way that taking such a trip can be justified. (Editor's note: The trip was cut to nine days on Friday by City Manager John Regan).
People all over the world are facing difficult times. The bottom line: If six workers for the city want to make a trip to Europe, it can't be at taxpayer expense.
The same belt-tightening approach needs to be followed by orange street workers. It's the teachers jobs that matter.
All of our city's workers need to practice the same belt-tightening that everyone else practices.
