See below. Our St. Johns County school system is blessed with high-achieving students and is the envy of the State.
However, some of our school administrators are deeply insensitive when it comes to complying with the law. They've repeatedly been involved in First Amendment violations, as found by the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida..
Now the School Board shows contempt for Article I, Section 24 of our Florida Constitution, which requires Government-in-the-Sunshine. More than 3.8 million Florida voters voted to support it in November 1992 -- 82%.
Given the subject matter -- schools -- school board meetings should be held at night, so that students, parents and teachers may attend.
One should not be required to take a day off from work to be a good citizen, to watch the school board, or to participate in governmental affairs.
Daytime meetings of governmental bodies
Sounds like some of the School Board members need to be replaced, starting with the Chair.
The idea of daytime School Board meetings is intended to frustrate public participation.
As they say in East Tennessee, our School Board "bears watchin'"
