Tale of Two Cities: Three Public Interest Victories in One Night --- Democracy on the March in Cities of St. Augustine and St. Augustine Beach, Florida

Three cheers for "Democracy on the March" in the Cities of St. Augustine and St. Augustine Beach.
Earlier tonight, the twin cities of St. Augustine and St. Augustine Beach held back-to-back meetings, a relative rarity (made necessary by the Hawaii honeymoon of just-married SAB Commissioner Undine Pawlowski and former SAB Mayor Edward George -- Salud!).
First, the City of St. Augustine rejected an appeal by a one-percenter who wanted to destroy the historic building at 80 Markland Place. Vote: 5-0. (See more below).
Then the City of St. Augustine Beach voted unanimously to issue a Request for Proposals for telecommunications, rejecting a no-bid sweetheart contract that city staff had proposed with WINDSTREAM COMMUNICATIONS, whose unconscionable "contract of adhesion" City Attorney Douglas Nelson Burnett had skewered. Vote: 5-0 (see below).
Then the City of St. Augustine Beach directed the City Attorney research mobile food trucks with an eye toward allowing them, with regulation and inspections, overturning years of mercantilist regulations (which probably violated antitrust laws and improbably favored "brick and mortar businesses," including those of past and present politicians, fundraisers and contributors).
In each case, informed public opinion and comment guided wise policies.
In each case, the public interest was protected against greedy special interests.
In each case, greedy one-percenters -- who thought they owned these local governments -- lost.
"We, the People" won again.
Yes, we can!
Democracy is on the March in the twin cities of St. Augustine and St. Augustine Beach, Florida.
Three cheers!
Viva!
Footnote and Full Disclosure: I left the City of St. Augustine meeting early so that I could attend and speak the St. Augustine Beach meeting.
My apologies.
The laws of physics require that I can only be in one place at once.
Aw, shucks!
