In secret, behind locked gates, our Nation's Oldest City dumped a landfill in a lake (Old City Reservoir), while emitting sewage in our rivers and salt marsh. Organized citizens exposed and defeated pollution, racism and cronyism. We elected a new Mayor. We're transforming our City -- advanced citizenship. Ask questions. Make disclosures. Demand answers. Questions Unanswered, Data Still Not Supplied, on Privacy-Violating 450th Event App
I was also concerned about the permissions the Celebrate 450 app asks for and found your blog post while doing some searching.
I agree that it asks for a lot of permissions it probably doesn't need, but I do have a correction to send your way: the app does *not* have the ability to read your text messages. I think your source may have been mistaken by some of the descriptions of the requested permissions.
But don't just take my word for it! Here is a link to screenshots of the requested permissions from the Google Play store, I took them this morning. The app was last updated July 7th, 2015, so these permissions haven't changed since then. Maybe an earlier edition could have read texts, but the one currently on the store can't: http://imgur.com/a/7tmz7
