Thirteen (13) residents spoke against cutting down three century old oaks at 34 East San Carlos, and City Planning and Zoning Board members unanimously turned it down today, January 5, 2016. Testifying against tree-killing were Dennis Maloney, Melinda Rakoncay, Sandy Lenney, Sacha Martin, Nancy Hamlin-Vogler, James Carr, Celeste Carr, Drew Rhodes, Jean Rhodes Richard John, Gina Burrell, Jon Gorecki and me (Ed Slavin). We waited around for hours, and We, the People won, unanimously. Again. The developer can build a house there, but will not be destroying any trees. Happy New Year!
In secret, behind locked gates, our Nation's Oldest City dumped a landfill in a lake (Old City Reservoir), while emitting sewage in our rivers and salt marsh. Organized citizens exposed and defeated pollution, racism and cronyism. We elected a new Mayor. We're transforming our City -- advanced citizenship. Ask questions. Make disclosures. Demand answers. Be involved. Expect democracy. Report and expose corruption. Smile! Help enact a St. Augustine National Park and Seashore. We shall overcome!
