PRISCILLA "RACHEL" BENNETT OUT OF RACE

Controversial, developer-driven St. Johns County Commissioner PRISCILLA "RACHEL" BENNETT (R-Hutson Companies) has withdrawn from the race for re-election.

Wonder why?

What reason? FBI?

My reasons for not running are purely personal. I have no plan to resign.

St. Johns County Commissioner Rachael Bennett said Tuesday she will not seek re-election in November, citing personal reasons as the cause for her withdrawal from the race.

With Bennett out of the race, four people are now vying for her seat — Dottie Acosta, Rose Bailey, Henry Dean and Jake Riley, according to the St. Johns County Supervisor of Elections website.

Bennett filed to run in November and has collected more than $31,000 in campaign contributions, according to the site.

“I withdrew for completely personal reasons having to do with my family, my health and my future,” Bennett said in an interview after Tuesday’s County Commission meeting. “It’s been an honor to serve. I have nothing but good things to say about staff and administration and the office in general.”

Bennett added later, “It started with my mother’s death.”

She said other things have happened in her life, as well.

“At a certain point you have to reprioritize. ... It’s totally personal,” she said.

Bennett said there has been an investigation by the Florida Commission on Ethics into a complaint filed against her about 18 months ago, a process which is expected to wrap up soon. But she said that has nothing to do with her decision to withdraw from the race — she said she has learned that it has been recommended she be cleared of all details of the complaint in that case.

“I don’t have any worries about that,” she said.

Details of the complaint were not available from the state commission on ethics on Tuesday.

In general, “[A] complaint, as well as all proceedings and records relating to the complaint are confidential until the accused requests that such records be made public or until the complaint reaches a stage in the Commission’s proceedings where it becomes public,” according to the commission on ethics website.

Bennett was elected to the St. Johns County Commission in November 2012. She was elected by other commissioners to be chair in 2014. Commissioner Jeb Smith now serves as the chair.

Thank God! The very epitome of a developer puppet, she is largely responsible for the state of the county, which is SUCK, by the way. Approving practically every development that crossed her desk, she has forever ruined what was once a beautiful place to live. Now she'll probably move to some nice quiet unspoilt area with the bag of loot that was paid to her in tribute for her voting record. Good riddance.
