WEST PALM BEACH —
Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg said Wednesday he has withdrawn his name from consideration for U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida.

Aronberg, a Democrat, had been on a short list of candidates seeking an appointment from President Donald Trump to become the U.S. Attorney for South Florida.

He confirmed to The Palm Beach Post Wednesday a story reported hours earlier in The Miami Herald listing him as one of six candidates who were interviewed in April and May to become the head of the federal prosecutor’s office in the district that stretches from Fort Pierce to Key West. The Herald reported he surfaced as an alternate candidate.

But Aronberg told The Post he had withdrawn his application.

“I am committed to the important work being done in our community and eager to continue my service in Palm Beach County,” Aronberg said in a statement.

Aronberg, a former state senator, was elected in November to his second term as state attorney in a race where he ran unopposed.

Trump’s appointment will provide a permanent replacement for Wifredo Ferrer, who was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009. In March, Ferrer left the office to head up the Global Compliance and Investigations team at the international law firm Holland & Knight.

Acting U.S. Attorney Ben Greenberg is now serving as the head of the office.
