Controversial former St. Augustine Vice Mayor ERROL DONLEVY JONES died. Visitation and service on Saturday at Chase Funeral home.
JONES was a disappointment to his constituents, who expected better from the well-educated African-American former Dean of St. Augustine High School.
Sadly, JONES often appeared in government and community meetings to be intoxicated.
When his 2008 opponent, my then-boss, Judith Seraphin pointed this out, JONES did not deny it -- the St. Augustine Record interviewed candidates back then and posted the video.
JONES was a noisome nasty Commissioner and a developer puppet.
Watching him ingratiate himself with developers like Chester Stokes was emetic, a pathetic display of a money-hungry politician always ready to vote to destroy our town. He was the de on several projects, including turning the Ponce de Leon golf course, a world-class Donald Ross designed 1926 golf course into homes (Palencia), even voting to declare it a Brownfield, allowing tax subsidies for removing some of the arsenic and other pesticides, fungicides and rodenticides. When people called the golf course "historic," JONES lit into them, saying "that golf course isn't historic -- they wouldn't let my daddy play there." Never an effective representative of the Black community, JONES preferred to play the race card from the bottom of the deck, using it to justify subsidizing Stokes & Co,
ERROL JONES often interrupted citizen speakers with insults, complaining when I gave the address of this blog as "advertising." His passionate defense of City Manager WILLIAM BARRY HARRISS's dumping of a landfill in a lake was a disgrace to the human race. (The videos were destroyed by longtime Assistant City Manager TIMOTHY BURCHFIELD, ho never offered them to the St. Augustine Historic Society.
Closeted bisexual self-hating St. Augustine Vice Mayor ERROL DONLEV JONES was the decididing vote in the 3-2 City Commission vote May 23, 2005 against flying Rainbow flags on our Bridge of Lions, and he even went to federal court with the City's attorneys -- United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida Henry Lee Adams, Jr. , who ruled for the plaintiffs Rev. Ruth Jensen and her wife, Elizabeth Forbell, holding that the City violated the First and Fourteenth Amendment in rejecting an honor for Pride 2005. The Rainbow flags flew from 42 flagpoles on the Bridge of Lions and seven along the Bayrtong from June 8-13, 2005.
JONES allegedly sexually harassed several citizens, leading to at least one injunction against him to stop bothering a lady he told that he wanted to "boink."
Once WILLIAM BARRY HARRISS retired as St. Augustine City Manager, JONES was no longer granted unofficial impunity and immunity for his crimes.
As he was being taken into custody on his first arrest in 2011, ERROL JONES asked the arresting officers, "Do you know who I am?"
This reported remark led Commissioner Leanna Sophia Amaru Freeman to joke, to her fellow Commissioners as they got coffee in the anteroom, that she was considering getting an amended Commissioner badge that would include the words "Do you know who I am?"
When ERROL JONES called City Manager Regan the night of that first arrest, JONES demanded special treatment, to wit, the "catch and release" treatment often dispensed to influential public officials and influential citizens.
To his everlasting credit, Mr. Regan denied JONES' illegal request,
I later told Mr. Regan that "When the City Manager's not blackmailing the Commissioners, the police can do their job." Thrice Mr. Regan told me that my assessment was "remarkably prescient."
JONES was arrested twelve (12) times. JONES' criminal defense lawyer was sometimes St. Augustine trial lawyer Patrick Canan, a St. Johns County School Board member (involved in notoriously disgraceful conduct in lying about mold-contaminated SAHS wrestling mats in 2022).
Former St. Augustine Vice Mayor ERROL DONLEVY JONES ended his days on the second floor of 161 Marine Street, involuntarily. due to his addiction and behavior problems.
