76 Fake Charities Shared a Mailbox. The I.R.S. Approved Them All. (NY Times)

Corporations and Republicans in Congress harassed IRS for "doing its job too well."

It is illegal to fire a nuclear plant quality control inspector for doing their job "too well." See Mackowiak v. University Nuclear Systems, Inc., 735 F. 2d 1159, 1163 (9th Cir. 1984).

But Congress has retaliated against IRS for doing its job "too well" on charities, harassed for taking on right-wing political operations.

President Trump and Congress declawed, defanged, spayed and neutered IRS criminal investigations.

The result: IRS has its hands tied behind its back in cases of obvious fraud.

Jimmy Breslin famously wrote that if an IRS auditor couldn't find something, they would take away their pencil and make them write with an antique coin.

IRS failing to detect these phony charities is stinky.

While hard-working Americans pay their taxes, horrible fraudfeasors are ripping us off.

Enough.

The tax agency is the gatekeeper for America’s charity system, but reduced vetting has opened the door to scams.

Ian Hosang is accused by prosecutors in New York of operating a long-running charity fraud that has astounded nonprofit regulators and watchdogs.
