I supported Matthew Metz for Public Defender, but I'm disappointed with his disorganization and sloth.
He promised, in writing, a Brady List. Has no documents on his work on it.
He's dropped the ball.
He's ducked the questions.
Electing an ambiguous Republican as Public Defender was a mistake.
Republican politicians disdain poor people.
We have a right to a Brady List of unreliable, unethical witnesses,
Here's the correspondence:
Mr. Slavin,
I have received the attached public records request. Please find our answers below:
- We do not currently possess a brady list or any drafts.
- We have not downloaded or created any research on the topic.
- We do not have any written documentation regarding implantation of a brady list.
- Email responses from myself to citizen inquires are attached.
- No communications currently exist between PD7 and FBI, local law enforcement, or prosecutors regarding the creation of a Brady List that I am aware of.
- We do not possess NDAA materials regarding organizational standards or materials. An attached email contains an unverified website alleged to contain statewide brady material.
We do not have a target date for an office wide Brady List. The Office of the Public Defender has a number of different goals and our current prioritization ranks recruitment, retention, and training of our attorneys at the highest level. Additionally, required Brady disclosures by the State of Florida in a case by case basis allow us to still maintain a base level of knowledge regarding required disclosures. While I seek finish every goal I have set for myself and this office, some will be more timely than others.
Sincerely,
Matthew Metz

Mr. Roland,
Thank you for reaching out. We have not created a Brady list at this time and are still considering the best way to do so. Unfortunately it is going to require on going Public Records requests and we are having discussions about the best way to ensure we don’t miss information and how to store it so it’s easily available. I have not forgotten about it but I appreciate you checking.
Sincerely,
Matthew Metz

Re: Brady List for 7th Judicial District of Florida .
Mr. Metz,
I communicated with you, when you were running for P.D..
You stated to me that, if Elected, you would be for creating a Brady List .
Your Opponents, were NOT.
Question: Is there now , a Brady List for the 7th Judicial District ?.
Best Regards,
Merrill Paul Roland

Mr. Ronald,
I appreciate you following up. Unfortunately, we haven’t created one at this time. Over the past two years our main focus has been recruiting and training as many of our lawyers have been scooped up by private law firms who have greater flexibility and higher salaries. Additionally, the legislature has been working on a brady list bill that may affect our ability to have them. We should know more after this session is over. (https://floridapolitics.com/archives/603267-house-passes-bill-to-let-cops-challenge-brady-list-designations/#:~:text=The%20bill%20(HB%2095)%20would,suspend%20or%20fire%20an%20officer). Good Morning,
This was just referred to me by an attorney. I don’t know anything about the website’s efficacy or even who runs it but it appears to be worth looking into.
