Judith J. Burnett (Judy) passed away peacefully at home on October 26, 2023. Judy was born September 28, 1944, in DeLisle, Mississippi, and spent the last 50 years in Northeast Florida.
Judy is survived by, and will be lovingly remembered by, her husband of 54 years, Major General (retired) Douglas Burnett. She is also survived by their son, Douglas Nelson (Araan) Burnett, daughter, Julie Kay (Jared) Reston, both of St. Augustine, Florida, sister Kay Prinzo (Michael), of Navarre, Florida, and seven grandchildren who she was lovingly known as Gramma: the boys, Preston, Fletcher, and Gunnar and the girls, Megan, Emily, Lauren, and Macey. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Ethel Jones, and sister Betty Gallagher, DeLisle, Mississippi.
Being raised in Mississippi, Judy graduated from Pass Christian High School and attended the University of Southern Mississippi, graduating with a B.S. in Business Education ('66), and a Masters in Education ('67). She was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, national academic organization and Kappa Delta social sorority. She earned a second Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of North Florida.
Judy loved teaching and during her career taught at St. Mary's Dominican College in New Orleans, Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, and the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. She went on to teach at Florida State College at Jacksonville, Downtown Campus, for 33 years, where she earned the Roland Kennedy Endowed Chair, and was recognized as FSCJ Professor of the Year. She is remembered for her huge heart, love of education, endless patience, and genuine concern for her students. Her professional calling in life was positively impacting the lives of others, especially her students at FSCJ (f/k/a FJC and FCCJ), Downtown Campus. She enjoyed keeping in touch with her students after graduation, helping them find jobs or sharing in their success.
She also taught Sunday School to young girls and boys at First Baptist Church in downtown Jacksonville for many years and, more recently, became a member of Deermeadows Baptist Church. In honor of her dedicated service to the community, Judy was presented the Florida Commission on the Status of Women Achievement Award.
Judy's hobbies included recreational activities with her family, especially water skiing and boating at the family lake house in Keystone Heights. She spent countless hours as the dedicated boat driver while her husband, children and grandchildren waterskied. Judy/Mommy/Gramma was never the one to tire or call it a day and had an endless capacity to make sure everyone in her family was together and enjoying themselves. She had a passion for fun, found joy through observing the happiness of others, and often rescued/adopted animals, one time taking in seven cats, a dog and a squirrel.
At her core, she was selfless. Judy's sense of humor was delightful and brought joy to everyone around her. She was an excellent listener, reliable advisor, had infinite patience, loved all people, and was loved by all. She had a forgiving spirit and love of all of God's creatures. Her beautiful smile and gracious spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Funeral services will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery Chapel, Jacksonville, Florida, on Thursday, November 2, 2023. The visitation will be at 9:30 AM and services following at 11:00 AM.
