Statement of Ed Slavin, St. Johns County Commission, December 16, 2025

We must safeguard our liberties. Inspiring words of Senator Robert Taft inscribed upon the Taft Memorial and Carillon on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., state:

IF WE WISH TO MAKE DEMOCRACY
PERMANENT IN THIS COUNTRY
LET US ABIDE
BY THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES
LAID DOWN IN THE CONSTITUTION
LET US SEE THAT THE
STATE IS THE SERVANT
OF ITS PEOPLE AND THAT THE
PEOPLE ARE NOT THE SERVANTS
OF THE STATE

LIBERTY HAS BEEN THE KEY TO
OUR PROGRESS IN THE PAST
AND IS THE KEY TO
OUR PROGRESS IN THE FUTURE
IF WE CAN PRESERVE LIBERTY
IN ALL ITS ESSENTIALS
THERE IS NO LIMIT TO THE FUTURE
OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE

Our County urgently needs a County Charter, protecting our rights.  I called for a County Charter in 2022, when Commisssioners voted 3-2 to stick a sales tax referendum on our County Ballot.  We, the People rejected the sales tax, for the seventh time in three decades.  We still don't have a County Charter.  We need limited government.  As Admiral Rickover said to Annapolis grqduate Jimmy Carter, "why not the best?"  Let's appoint a County Charter Review Commission, comply with Florida law, and join some 20 other Florida governments with County Charters,

Why  not the best?

Thank you.
