Letter: Respect all beliefs for informed choice

Editor: When making a choice in a public setting to present a specific program, consideration of everyone's beliefs and ideals is always prudent. It is also nearly impossible to take into consideration all and any possible ramifications of the chosen material without over stepping someone's personal boundaries.
The word "God'' has on many occasion sparked such a controversy. This word can be interpreted in many ways, in many languages with both positive and negative results. One should not conclude the appearance of correct or incorrect, rather accept and respect an individuals own personal beliefs and their freedom to make an educated choice.
When children are educated about all aspects of religion, or the conscientious choice of nature, karma or the absence of religious belief at all, then when an appropriate time comes in their life they can also make a conscientious decision about their personal beliefs and convictions.
As parents and educators, it is our responsibility to educate children concerning all aspects of life without forcing them to accept any particular beliefs or ideals.
Waging a public battle concerning a question of choice of curriculum appears counter productive to the concepts that we are trying to infuse in our children. When adults disagree with boisterous and public statements, children listen. Children follow the example demonstrated by adults.
The concepts of honesty, caring, compassion, humility and gratitude make up the very core of character we hope our children will absorb. Acceptance and forgiveness complete the characteristic formula every parent and educator should strive to instill in all children.
A public battle concerning the question of an educated choice sets an entirely negative example for all children. Perhaps a better option would be to question, agree to compromise and move forward to the next challenge life presents.
