Like the Monty Wooley character in the movie, "The Man Who Came to Dinner," the City of St. Augustine's auditors have stayed too long, overstaying their welcome.
Not the brightest pencils in the box, they were silent throughout the 450th, and seem unfamiliar with it. They never had any suggestions on internal controls after the City dumped 40,000 cubic yards of landfill in a lake, dumped sewage effluent and sewage in our rivers and saltwater marshes, and generally conducted business like a corrupt country store. Their activities must be scrutinized. Now.
In secret, behind locked gates, our Nation's Oldest City dumped a landfill in a lake (Old City Reservoir), while emitting sewage in our rivers and salt marsh. Organized citizens exposed and defeated pollution, racism and cronyism. We elected a new Mayor. We're transforming our City -- advanced citizenship. Ask questions. Make disclosures. Demand answers. Be involved. Expect democracy. Report and expose corruption. Smile! Help enact a St. Augustine National Park and Seashore. We shall overcome!
