Last month, B.J. Kalaidi reported a sign on the former youth hostel on Bridge Street, offering housing for only female students. This is a violation of the Federal Fair Housing Act. At the February 8, 2016 City Commission meeting, Mayor Nancy Shaver responded to Ms. Kalaidi's concern by stating that she had filed a Fair Housing Act complaint online at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development website.
Three cheers!
Our City of St. Augustine was once run by racists. Our Mayor is now a progressive who cared enough about race, age and gender discrimination to complaint to HUD. As LBJ said after Selma, before a Joint Session of Congress, "We SHALL overcome!" Or as we say in Spanish, "Venceremos!"
The property in quo is controlled by DAVID BARTON CORNEAL's dodgy companies. In the dirty fight to win approval for his dodgy Dow Planned Unit Development (Cordova Inn), CORNEAL threatened to rent rooms in the former Dow Museum of Historic Homes to students and other renters. Now he's violating the Fair Housing Act by triply discriminatory rental terms. What a monster.
