Our City of St. Augustine is one of the few cities anywhere with a city archaeologist.
Esteemed St. Augustine City archaeologist Carl Halbirt is the only staff archaeologist we've ever had, and he is retiring soon. He's held this position since 1990. He just excavated his 800th site this week.
His successor is Andrea P. White, M.A., a University of New Orleans Professor, Florida native, former undergraduate pupil of Dr. Kathy Deegan and former volunteer and contractor for Carl Halbirt and the City.
Ms. White's College of William and Mary M.A. thesis is on the Yamassee site of La Punta.
Ms. White was formerly the Greater New Orleans Regional Archaeologist and Director of the Greater New Orleans Regional Archaeology Program.
Ms. White's specialities include historic archaeology, public archaeology, cultural resources management, and the southeastern United States.
Welcome, Ms. White!
In secret, behind locked gates, our Nation's Oldest City dumped a landfill in a lake (Old City Reservoir), while emitting sewage in our rivers and salt marsh. Organized citizens exposed and defeated pollution, racism and cronyism. We elected a new Mayor. We're transforming our City -- advanced citizenship. Ask questions. Make disclosures. Demand answers. Be involved. Expect democracy. Report and expose corruption. Smile! Help enact a St. Augustine National Park and Seashore. We shall overcome!
