November 17, 1973: Nixon Says, "I'M NOT A CROOK!"

It was a small Northeast Tennessee newspaper editor, the late  Richard D. Smyser, of The Oak Ridger, who asked the question that got the answer.

It was at a newspaper convention in Orlando.

The question was fairly innocuous, but the answer was inculpatory. Nixon had a guilty conscience, and resigned before the House of Representativevs got to vote out impeachment charges.

When I think of Nixon, I am reminded of other crooked Republicans and Tinpot Napoleons, including President DONALD JOHN TRUMP; disgraced Anderson County Sheriff Dennis O. Trotter, later sentenced to federal prison; and St. Johns County Sheriff DAVID SHOAR, who legally changed his name from "HOAR" in 1994.
