This is what accountability looks like.
On July 21, the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners voted to issue a vote of no confidence in two of their own commissioners and formally request that Governor DeSantis suspend them while criminal charges are pending. Those charges involve first-degree misdemeanors related to an unauthorized voter guide and misleading campaign mailers.
They didn’t look the other way. They used the authority available under the Florida Constitution and acted.
Now look at Marion County.
After two independent law firms issued reports substantiating malfeasance by School Board Member Sarah James related to the high school construction bid process, Board Member Eric Cummings declined to support referring those findings to the Governor for further action.
At least in St. Johns County, they still know what the right thing looks like when public trust is on the line.
When will Marion County hold its own leaders to the same standard?
