Baltimore Bridge Collapse Stops Shipping; A cargo ship hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore this week, causing it to collapse, which most people know by now. But did you know that the cargo ship that caused the Baltimore bridge collapse was carrying hazardous materials according to the National Transportation Safety Board?
NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said there are 56 containers aboard containing hazardous materials, including corrosives, flammables and lithium ion batteries. She said some containers were breached and a sheen was identified in the water that will be dealt with by authorities. She said the voyage data recorder has been recovered.
VIDEO FOOTAGE shows the vessel’s lights temporarily going dark suggesting the possibility of power control issues. The Port of Baltimore, responsible for 25% of the country’s coal exports, will be closed to all shipping traffic until the Bridge wreckage is cleared.
