Editor: 2010 is an election year and the current Congressional incumbent, John Mica, is running for re-election against a tough, new challenger and Navy veteran, Heather Beaven.
Mica's campaign website http://www.micaforcongress.com/news.html says that he has been endorsed by The St. Augustine Record. He quotes The Record as saying, "Return Mica to Congress" and then reprints the endorsement in full. It states, "Running against him is Faye Armitage, a Democrat, from Fruit Cove in The Record has not yet made any endorsements for the 2010 election.
Misleading? You bet. Deceitful? Absolutely.
Heather Beaven has not been endorsed by The Record either because no endorsements have been made for either candidate. However, she has been endorsed by the Democratic Veterans Caucus of Florida partly because she "...has previously served with honor and distinction in the United States Armed Forces and, through this unselfish service, has contributed to the security of our nation."
The values of service to country above self that Beaven continues to display, make her the better Congressional candidate in District 7, not Mica.
In secret, behind locked gates, our Nation's Oldest City dumped a landfill in a lake (Old City Reservoir), while emitting sewage in our rivers and salt marsh. Organized citizens exposed and defeated pollution, racism and cronyism. We elected a new Mayor. We're transforming our City -- advanced citizenship. Ask questions. Make disclosures. Demand answers. Be involved. Expect democracy. Report and expose corruption. Smile! Help enact a St. Augustine National Park and Seashore. We shall overcome!
