When DANIEL SAUL GELBER called me on July 2, 2010, I asked him why he went to work for AKERMAN SENTERFITT, the Republican law firm that fired Mark Herron for representing Al Gore, Jr. in the 2000 recount.
DAN GELBER gamely said it was because his friend and fellow former prosecutor, Steve Chaykin, wanted to change law firms and had an opportunity to work on corporate investigations at AKERMAN SENTERFITT. Chaykin died in a tragic accident (see below).
That was in 2008. Yet, oddly, Senator DAN GELBER remained with AKERMAN SENTERFITT, representing and advising the rich and powerful (and criminal) until a few days ago.
Wonder why?
Why would a putative "liberal" Democrat work for a right-wing corporate law firm that defends Big Oil, Big Tobacco and Big Sugar? AKERMAN SENTERFITT also beat up on St. Augustine environmental activists when we reported the City of St. Augustine's illegal dumping of 40,000 cubic yards of solid waste into our Old City Reservoir, claiming our petition for review was "frivolous" (as if putting solid waste into a coquina pit lake that is an open sore into the aquifer and the groundwater was a good thing).
Because SNAKERMAN SENTERFITT paid him $225,000/year?
Because he likes their political support?
Because he has no drive or desire to represent workers or consumers in cases that change people's lives?
A person is known by the company they keep. DANIEL SAUL GELBER has worked for oligopolists ever since he left his employment with homophobic U.S. Senator SAM NUNN.
