No respect -- BOLES sought sanctions against Dr. Dwight Hines for Open Records lawsuit -- 45 pounds of documents produced that City of St. Augustine claimed did not exist

Commissioner JOSEPH LESTER BOLES, JR., our Mayor since 2006, attacked Dr. Dwight Hines for seeking documents and filing an Open Records request, demanding his colleagues seek sanctions and make Dr. Hines "pay the piper."
BOLES said he wanted to discourage Open Records lawsuits. BOLES and fellow commissioners characterized Dr. Hines' lawsuit as "frivolous" without ever having actually read it.
Then St. Augustine Assistant City Manager TIMOTHY BURCHFIELD claimed the documents that Dr. Hines sought did not exist. In fact, the city's special counsel, SIDNEY FRANKLYN ANSBACHER, produced 45 pounds of documents. The City of St. Augustine ended up paying Dr. Hines' attorney fees.
Mayor BOLES and his buddies WILLIAM BRUCE HARRISS, former City Manager and CLAUDE LEONARD WEEKS, Jr., former Mayor, lack decent respect for Sunshine and Open Records laws. http://cleanupcityofstaugustine.blogspot.com/2006/11/record-should-reconsider-endorsements.html

Mayor BOLES has done little to end the climate of fear and failure to comply with reasonable expectations of probity.
Pay the piper?

It's time for the Mayor of the City of St. Augustine to be someone with integrity, who does not have their hand in the government's pockets and does not act like an energumen, chilling, coercing and restraining free speech rights of citizens and attempting to abuse courts to extort money from people like Dr. Dwight Hines, who seek information about the People's Business.

This is as chilling an indictment of our mayor as I have yet read. The people look the more they seem to find, much of it meant to strip the People of basic rights and access.

St. Augustine is not this mayor's personal fiefdom. Where is the accountability?

Thank you, Mr. Slavin for continuing to bring these actions into the light of day.

Now more than ever.
