City of St. Augustine workers continued to clean gallons of refuse Sunday from a sewage line break in the San Sebastian River, and the public is still advised to not fish or swim in the river.

The sewage line runs underneath the river and broke near Oyster Creek about 4 p.m. Saturday. John Regan, city chief operations officer, said Sunday that workers continued hauling waste water by truck to lift stations.

Regan said a contractor and dive teams will be at the site today to start repairing the break. Samples of the water will also be tested by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the St. Johns County Health Department to determine whether it's safe for the public to go back in the water, Regan said.

Public work crews began pumping sewage Saturday from the break into 3,000-gallon trucks from the lift station near Oyster Creek Marina. From there they took it across the river to a lift station on Riberia Street. It would then flow south to the wastewater treatment facility.

It was still unclear Sunday what caused the line break and how much sewage went into the river.
