So during Hurricane Irma, Flagler Hospital made nurses sleep on the floor, while doctors got beds or cots? No response from Flagler Hospital. Flagler Board member and CPA TODD DAVID NEVILLE ran away when I asked him about it September 25, 2017 (after the St. Augustine City Commission meeting, where he is a City Commissioner and Vice Mayor). I filed a complaint (below) with JCAHO today. It is patient safety incident report no. 12800OSC-52923ZAQ.
When he first ran for Commission in 2014, NEVILLE said of unconstitational artist arrests, "Let sleeping dogs lie."
Our artists are not "dogs." They are talented people who bring joy. They are entitled to be treated with dignity, respect and consideration. We should be celebrating artists and musicians. "Our streets are not lively," Mayor Nancy Shaver said in 2015. But NEVILLE and the rest of his "Gang of Four" refused to allow a workshop to adjust ordinances. Result -- yet another First Amendment violation, another lawsuit lost by the City in a string of First Amendment lawsuits in federal court.
Our nurses are not dogs. They are talented people who save lives. They are entitled to be treated with dignity, respect and consideration.
Nurses should NOT be required to sleep on the floor, like dogs. Ever.
Flagler Hospital's mismanaged top-heavy all-white, misognyist management needs to learn some manners. Report patient safety issues to JCAHO here:
https://www.jointcommission.org/report_a_complaint.aspx
You can make a report anonymously, but I gave my name. We must stand up to arbitrary power and oppression by local employers.
The recipient of copious quantities of government funds and county bonding authorities, including tens of millions of dollars in county bond issues, Flagler supposes itself above answering questions, as when its most recent $100 million bond issue was approved by St. Johns Commission. None of my questions were asked by five somnolent solons who did not care about patient safety issues such as high levels of preventable infections resulting in ACA penalties against Flagler Hospital.
We're going to teach Flagler Hospital some manners.
Flagler Hospital's misogynist management reminds me of another employer lacking in empathy, National Lead of Ohio, which long ran the fetid Fernald, Ohio "Feed Materials Production Plant" (FMPC) for the Atomic Energy Commission, Energy Research and Development Administration and Department of Energy. NLO's plant physician at Fernald was a veterinarian. That makes sense if you're treating the workers like dogs. (That veterinarian once told a woman worker who had been raped to just go out and have sex with a man, any man, and to get over it. They plant physician repeated it in front of the nurse, and again in front of a union rep., who told me about it in 1988, at an AFL-CIO conference of nuclear weapons workers in Amarillo, Texas, where I spoke about worker rights and remedies for safety violations, including criminal prosecution of wrongdoing DOE contractors like NLO)
At least Fernald FMPC workers had a union. There is apparently no union representing any of the workers at anti-union, infection-prone, mismanaged Flagler Hospital. It shows. Bigtime.
Flagler Hospital -- it "bears watchin'," as they say in East Tennessee. Here's my JCAHO report, supporting documentation and initial JCAHO acknowledgement:
1. During Hurricane Irma, Flagler Hospital nurses were allegedly ordered to sleep on the floor, while doctors were provided beds or cots.
2. This is a patient safety issue, as sleepless nurses are more likely to make mistakes.
3. Flagler Hospital has a nondelegable duty during hurricanes and other disasters to provide equal sleeping accommodations for its staff regardless of title.
4. Flagler Hospital was on notice of the likelihood of increasingly severe hurricanes after Hurricane Matthew hit us in October 2017. Maladroit preparations?
5. I wrote Flagler Hospital on September 24, 2017, requesting documents. No response.
6. I wrote Flagler Hospital again today. No response.
7. My e-mails stated inter alia:

Incident #12800OSC-52923ZAQ
Dear Mr. Slavin:
Thank you for sharing your concerns with The Joint Commission.
The Joint Commission takes seriously any information about one of our accredited organizations. We will review your concerns and determine if we can take any action. Our options include:
- Continue to evaluate this organization
- Ask the organization to provide The Joint Commission with a written response regarding your concerns
- Evaluate your concerns during an onsite review at this organization
The Joint Commission does not assess specific care of an individual patient, thus we are unable to tell you if appropriate medical care has been provided. Instead, our evaluation focuses on processes and policies that are required within our standards. For example, if we get a report regarding a patient’s infection, we will look at an organization’s infection control practices and policies to determine their compliance with Joint Commission requirements. If any opportunities for improvement are identified, we will work with the organization to correct practices and systems so that they meet or exceed our standards. You should understand that our purpose is to help improve the quality and safety of care.
Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. While the evaluation or actions we may take cannot affect the care one received in the past, the information you provided is used to improve the quality of care delivered by our accredited organizations.
