Joy cometh in the morning, the scripture says.
This morning, Riberia Street is teeming with construction workers, getting ready to start work on the $9 million construction of a proper street, moving utility poles and making other preparations. A staging area is nearby, with large pipes for drainage.
From this day forward, we might wish to call Riberia Street St. Augustine's “Here we right a wrong” street.
St. Augustine City officials long neglected Lincolnville and West Augustine, our historic African-American communities.
Now, under new leadership, hearing and responding to our historic Lincolnville community’s eloquent arguments about violation of Equal Protection (14th Amendment) they’re fixing ALL of Riberia Street with proper drainage, bulkheads, sidewalks and paving.
When it’s done, our community will have something to be proud of – a street, not an intermittent series of lacks, ponds and potholes.
The people, united, shall never be defeated.
We shall overcome.
