Happy 75th wedding anniversary to President Jimmy Carter, et ux, Rosalynn. I was honored to write the Chelsea House World Leaders for young readers series biography on President Carter. He was one of our most moral Presidents. I was honored to shake his hand and to hear him speak in North Carolina in 1977 during the Demoratic primary campaign. In 1977, I helped advise freshman U.S. Senator Jim Sasser (D-Tenn.) on President Carter's energy initative. On human rights and energy and environmenrtal policy, President Carter was ahead of his time. In retirement, he is a force for good, and a true treasure.
In secret, behind locked gates, our Nation's Oldest City dumped a landfill in a lake (Old City Reservoir), while emitting sewage in our rivers and salt marsh. Organized citizens exposed and defeated pollution, racism and cronyism. We elected a new Mayor. We're transforming our City -- advanced citizenship. Ask questions. Make disclosures. Demand answers. Be involved. Expect democracy. Report and expose corruption. Smile! Help enact a St. Augustine National Park and Seashore. We shall overcome!
