John Kenneth Galbraith was President John F. Kennedy's beloved Harvard economics professor friend, a delightful raconteur, and JFK's U.S. Ambassador to India (do read bis Ambassador's Journal). JKG published in 1970 a book evocatively entitled, Who needs the Democrats, and what it takes to be needed.  From The New York Times:

‘We Have No Coherent Message’: Democrats Struggle to Oppose Trump

More than 50 interviews with Democratic leaders revealed a party struggling to decide what it believes in, what issues to prioritize and how to confront an aggressive right-wing administration.

They won't come out and say that they aim for social democracy so...I can't say that I feel sorry for them. They're capitalists and people elected the grandaddy of them all this time around. That's what the American people get. But to be honest, if you look at some of our public systems, VHA for example, it's not to hard to understand those opposed to the public sector. It would be great if everyone had solid information about who inside these places are making things that way... what their politics are.
