Progressive Railroading: House committee to review possible projects

Congressional Oversight 10/27/2008

House committee to review potential infrastructure projects
Transit and transportation officials long have said that infrastructure projects are a boon to the economy. Now, members of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee are hoping to learn about some of the projects that could help stimulate the economy by creating new jobs.

Later this week, the committee will conduct a congressional hearing to review pending and delayed infrastructure projects. Transportation industry experts and public officials are expected to testify about the need to invest in those projects. For every $1 billion committed to infrastructure improvement projects, as many as 35,000 jobs can be created, according to a statement issued by Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.), the committee's Republican leader.

"We should focus on bringing important infrastructure projects online as soon as possible in order to create jobs, boost the economy and rebuild our crumbling highway, bridge, transit, rail, aviation, port and waterway infrastructure," said Mica.
