13News/Brighthouse: McGovern, 88, Makes First Skydive Jump

TITUSVILLE --

Former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate George McGovern successfully completed his first skydive Monday in Brevard County.

McGovern, the former senator from Minnesota, said he jumped for two reasons, to celebrate his 88th birthday, and to bring awareness to world hunger especially
among children.

"I'm in good health, McGovern told News 13. "I'd like to live to be 100 years of age. Not just because of a desire to enjoy life longer, but because there's
so much to be done in the world," he continued.

Knowing that reporters were present to watch, he made a pitch for his favorite cause - hungry chidren.

"In my book, the most important thing is erasing hunger among the small children of the world," he told a small group of supporters.

One third of the world's hungry are children, and he'd like to see congress appropriate an extra $100 million to help them.

McGovern served in the U.S. Senate from January 1963 to January 3, 1981. He also made a presidential run in 1968, but lost the Democratic nomination to Hubert Humphrey.
