Restoring Flags to Our Bayfront

In 2005, there were seven flagpoles along the Bayfront in St. Augustine --- Rainbow flags flew there June 7-13, 2005, along with 42 on the Bridge of Lions, on orders of United States District Court Judge Henry Leen Adams, Jr. in Jansen v. City of St. Augustine, a First Amendment case vindicating Gay rights.

Those flagpoles are no longer there.

The seven flagpoles along the Bayfront were removed on orders of then City Manager WILLIAM BARRY HARRISS, "as sebaceous a fatass as ever made a chair squeak," in the immortal words of Robert Penn Warren's All the King's Men.

The new Bridge of Lions has no flagpoles, and offers by local businesses to install them fell on indifferent or indifferent ears in City Hall and a prior City Commission.

It's time to replace our flags.
