Editor: Thank you for your recent article, "Shelter backer faults board," on Nov. 2, about the sad state of affairs at our beloved Humane Society and for correctly placing the responsibility where in belongs: on the director and the board. The director was way over her head in managing people and resources, and the board failed to ask critical questions or respond to the concerns of former board members, volunteers and the staff.
Our caring community absolutely supports the care of our animal friends.
During my service on the board I worked with other board members to improve the facility, raise funds, and support the mission of the organization but our dissatisfaction with the director fell on deaf ears to the former board president. Rusty Hall unfortunately inherited the continuing problems that were to continue because the director was never replaced.
Out of complete frustration many of us, along with many, many volunteers resigned. Philip Genovar and his family are right to feel betrayed by poor performance of the current director and some board members.
So what do we do now? Many people are willing to help. Im sure the county animal services staff would also help. Im ready to help, I have a list of people ready to help.
We need to convene a community forum with an objective facilitator to get us started. Perhaps our local United Way? Lets put all of our egos aside and remember the bottom line, humane care for the animals in our community.

In secret, behind locked gates, our Nation's Oldest City dumped a landfill in a lake (Old City Reservoir), while emitting sewage in our rivers and salt marsh. Organized citizens exposed and defeated pollution, racism and cronyism. We elected a new Mayor. We're transforming our City -- advanced citizenship. Ask questions. Make disclosures. Demand answers. Be involved. Expect democracy. Report and expose corruption. Smile! Help enact a St. Augustine National Park and Seashore. We shall overcome!
