TIME TO FIRE St. Johns County's Double-minded Lobbyist MARTIN FIORENTINO: Conflicts of Interest, Incompetence, Insouciance

Lousy louche lobbyist MARTIN FIORENTINO was fired by St. Johns County ten years ago, rehired, and may be fired again.  

After wasting some $500,000 on THE FIORENTINO GROUP's services over ten (10) years, there are no County records evidencing any accomplishments, and FIORENTINO came up short at the September 18, 2018 County Commission meeting, disappointing Commissioner James K. Johns and other Commissioners, who had expected a briefing on pending legislation and past work.

Instead, they got a rambling, disorganized namedropping nothingburger, in which FIORENTINO lauded the likes of State Sen. Travis Hutson Rep. Cyndi Stevenson, Paul Renner, while noting that none of the County's bills have been introduced yet because he does not know who the relevant committee chairs will be.   

Commissioner James K. Johns asked for what THOMAS MARTIN FIORENTINO was supposed to provide during its schpiel, and didn't:

No response.   

"This is not the presentation I requested," Commissioner Johns stated.

"We don't know the process yet," said FIORENTINO's longtime lobbyist JOSEPH MOBLEY, married to a Clay County Judge.    

Until committee chairs and assignments are made, FIORENTINO won't know who "we" will have introduce "our" bills.

Overrated, Republican fundraiser-lobbyist  FIORENTINO offered private briefings later this week, an end-run around Sunshine laws, while NOT having any advance materials, and a  handout distributed only to Commissioners at the last minute.  (I finally got one afterwards).

THOMAS MARTIN FIORENTINO represents Sheriff David SHOAR, PARC Group (NOCATEE developers), Flagler Hospital, Jacksonville University, City of Jacksonville, AT&T, Crowley Maritime, UBER, CSX, the Clerk of Courts and other interests -- some 52 other clients. 

Citizen watchdog Tom Reynolds and I called for FIORENTINO to be FIRED.   Longtime environmental advocate Ellen Wittmer agreed that FIORENTINO has an inexorable conflict of interest, particularly about Nocatee.  Our concerns were unrebutted -- no one defended FIORENTINO's conflicts of interest.  "A man cannot serve two masters," as Matthew explained, followed by federal and state courts on conflict of interest cases. 

MARTY FIORENTINO must be FIRED.  Now.

Historical Legislative Update from The Fiorentino Group. The Fiorentino Group has represented St. Johns County for more than a decade as its State lobbyist. Per the Board’s request, The Fiorentino Group will be presenting a historical legislative update that highlights our comprehensive government affairs strategy, accomplishments, and preparations for the coming legislative session.

Consider the proposed 2019 St. Johns County Legislative Action Plan and Top Three Legislative priorities. The St. Johns County Legislative Action Plan is a focused list of priorities for which the County requests financial assistance and other support from our State and Federal legislative delegation members. Legislative priorities have historically included issues related to Florida Statutes, transportation, water quality, unfunded mandates, and a variety of other subjects. During this item, County Administration will present a list of recommended legislative priorities that was compiled with input from staff, constitutional officers, local cities, and other regional partners for the Board to consider adopting as the 2019 Legislative Action Plan. The approved Legislative Action Plan is subsequently presented to the public and submitted to the County’s Legislative Delegation for consideration prior to the next legislative session. In addition, the Northeast Florida Regional Council (NEFRC) requests that all member Counties identify and consider adopting three top legislative priorities from the Legislative Action Plan. The NEFRC Legislative Committee will subsequently identify regional priorities for the 2019 Legislative Session that will be submitted to the region’s State and Federal Elected officials.
