Jacksonville NAACP to commemorate 64 years since Ax Handle Saturday. (WJXT)

My late friend and mentor, civil rights hero Wm. Stetson Kennedy, died on this day in 2011. That morning, he awoke in the hospital and remembered that it was the anniversary of Ax Handle Saturday. From WJXT:

The Jacksonville Youth Council of the NAACP will commemorate the 64th anniversary of the 1960 Sit-Ins and Ax Handle Saturday on Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Oakland. RELATED: It's been 63 years since Ax Handle Saturday. On Aug. 27, 1960, a mob of white men with axes and bats attacked black people after a sit-in at a segregated lunch counter in downtown Jacksonville. Charlie Cobb Jr. will be the speaker at the event.

He was active in the Civil Rights Movement and the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).

The commemoration will take place from 6-8 p.m Saturday at First Baptist Church of Oakland Out-East at 1025 Jessie St. Jacksonville, FL 32206.
