$140 for 2 Foot Scissors in SJC PR Photo

Outrageous.

There's our Republican St. Johns County officials hamming it up at the dedication of the Health and Human Services Building, a/k/a "Gauze Mahal," with a pair of $140 scissors.

A $140 pair of scissors. Purchased by the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners from Golden Openings, Urbandale, Indiana on February 5, 2015.

How louche and gauche: notice that Sheriff DAVID BERNERD SHOAR f/k/a "HOAR" and his political machine are laughing -- at you.

Laughing at you for tolerating their tawdry, tedious ways.

Since there's no ombudsman and no inspector general, who you gonna call?

Conspicuous, invidious consumption as economist and sociologist Thorstein Veblein would have called it.

Boston voters finally stopped believing Mayor James Michael Curley after he purchased $20 trash cans for City Hall circa 1950.
People know what trash cans cost. People know what scissors cost.

St. Johns County and other local governments are smeared, bleared and teared with waste, fraud, abuse, misfeasance, malfeasance, nonfeasance, flummery, dupery, nincompoopery, corruption, discrimination, Sunshine and Open Records violations and no-bid contracts.

It's our money.

Enough.

You have such awesome comments on your blog that are devalued by the juvenile a/k/a name calling. It's so High School. How can anyone take you seriously with the silly names.

Locals do call it the "Gauze Mahal." Not my invention.
Shoar's name was "Hoar" before he changed it.
Part of my approach to covering politics skewering the pomposity, pretension and prevarications of the political class, particularly those who exploit others
I have no intention of ever being boring or imitating the likes of James Reston, Arthur Krock, George F. Will, Thomas Sowell or other soporific solipsistic columnists who cowered to the controlling political and economic interests of their times.
My heroes include Frank Rich, Mark Twain, Tom Wicker, Will Rogers, Bill Maher and George Carlin.
If I made you think for yourself, how cool is that?
If my sense of humor is not your cup of tea, that's ok.
"[Some] like Offenbach and [some] like Bach. So what. So what. So what. " (From the musical, "Can-Can." :)
My twisted sense of humor is the result of a lifetime of observing and participating in politics, journalism, law, scholarship and activism, observing human foibles and sharing the truth in the situation.
But thanks for commenting, even anonymously!
