I agree with DANIEL SAUL GELBER, Mayor of Miami Beach, concerning hours of service for alcohol. Noise from drunken partiers until 5 AM has not abated. He's right to want to change the hours of service. The alcohol industry is wrong to fight him on this -- it makes them look like a bunch of mafioisi. I hope he's re-elected.
Footnote: in 2010, I supported ethical lawyer Dave Aronberg, now the Palm Beach County State's Attorney, against Gelber in the 2010 Democratic Primary, which nomianted Gelber as our 2010 Democratic candidate for Florida State Attorney General. I thought Gelber was less than candid with me in a telephone interview about his being a partner at the Akerman Senterfitt law firm, which represented BP, at a time when our state needed to sue BP for the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.)
As Miami Beach Mayor, Dan Gelber is doing a very good job, and he's right on alcohol service hours. This is a Profile in. Courage, and I commend him.
His father was a prosecutor, a judge, and Miami Beach Mayor from 1991-1997. The late Juge Seymour Gelber, who died at age 99 in 2019, would be very proud of his son today.
