I was there in Summer 2012, when Holland & Knight attorney RONALD DION DeSANTIS first spoke as a Republican Congressional Primary candidate at a League of Women Voters forum in our St. Johns County Commission Auditorium, a/k/a "Taj Mahal."
Naturally, I was gullible and all too willing to give Mr. DeSANTIS the benefit of the doubt because of H&K's pro bono work for eighteen of us here in St. Augustine. H&K made quick work of the City of St. Augustine's asinine but audacious creation of a non-profit group (First American Foundation) to run our City's 450th anniversary celebration out of the Sunshine, for the express purpose of avoiding Open Records and Sunshine laws in fundraising and planning.
But once RON DeSANTIS became a Congressman, it was apparent he was an empty suit.
DeSANTIS is an extremist with no moral compass.
In early 2013, I visited with his two local staffers at an office building across the street from St. Johns County Jail. I spoke with his staffers, expecting an intelligent reception for the proposed St. Augustine National Historical Park and National Seashore.
Nothing came of it. While waiting for my ride in the building lobby, I overheard the two hobbledehoys in DeSANTIS' employ stating that the Congressman would "never" support the National Park and Seashore because DeSANTIS's extremist base (Tea Party) hated the idea.
Now we know that DeSANTIS so full of himself that he is engaged in serial violation of civil rights. From CBS Miami:
